Way Back When-sday Had Quite a Comeback

October 30, 2004: Having a little trouble coming to grips with the fact that “the Braylon game” was almost 20 years ago, but here we are. The first families of UMTailgate pose before Michigan comes back from a 17-point 4th quarter deficit to defeat Michigan State 45-37 in triple overtime. Chad Henne went 24 of 35 for 273 yards and 4 TDs, of which 189 yards and 3 TDs were Braylon’s. More memories on the game page here.

Way Back When-sday is at the Top of the Pyramid

October 19, 1996: The crew gets creative before Michigan comes back from down 17-7 to beat the Hoosiers 27-20, a comeback that included a 48-yard end around by future Heisman trophy winner Charles Woodson. Even the play by play stenographer knew CW was something special and got flowery with the language: “Williams started right, reversed to woodson who danced away from tacklers and went around le for 48 and the M TD.“ Love it. Also looking forward to re-creating this photo this week. I think we have half of this crew still around on the regular :). The rest of the pictures from this day 27 years ago are up on the game page.

Way Back When-sday Ran Up the Score

October 24, 1992: Just 31 years ago 🤮, the group (with a super early Stephen appearance!) gathered before Michigan manhandled the Golden Gophers 63-13 in the Big House, amazingly just the second worst beat down of the Gophers (58-0 in 2011). Michigan had 66 carries for 391 yards and 5 touchdowns AND Elvis was 14/19 (11 of them to Derrick Alexander) for 208 yards and 4 more touchdowns. More on the game page.

Way Back When-sday Was Just A Freshman

October 8, 1994: The group picture before a 40-20 Michigan victory over the Spartans. Straight out of the box score: “With Tyrone Wheatley's 153 rushing yards on 23 attempts (6.7 yards per carry) and Tshimanga Biakabutuka's 141 rushing yards on 15 attempts (9.4 yards per carry), this backfield duo became the first Wolverines to run for 100 or more yards in the same game since Ricky Powers (151 rushing yards on 26 carries) and Jesse Johnson (104 rushing yards on 21 carries) ran for a combined 255 rushing yards against Illinois in 1991. The Wolverines racked up a total of 349 rushing yards, marking the first time that Michigan has run for over 300 yards since the Wolverines had 308 yards (including a 15 carry, 235-yard performance by Tyrone Wheatley) in a 38-31 victory over Washington in the 1993 Rose Bowl.” Head over to the game page here for more pics from this 29 year old gameday.

Way Back When-sday Inducted the Captain

September 29, 2001: Captain Michigan retires (for the first time) from leg wrestling, and becomes the first person inducted to the UMTailgate Hall of Fame before Michigan’s 45-20 victory over the Illini in the 2001 Big Ten opener. BJ Askew ran for 2TDs, John Navarre threw for 2 TDs, and the Bin Lotto rolled over to the following week (if you know, you know). Pics from the rest of that day are on the game page.
